The Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) announced the deployment of three climate-monitoring and maritime-safety buoys at Marquette, Munising and Grand Marais on Lake Superior, reports The Minging Journal. The three buoys will collect critical data for recreational and commercial boating use as well as climate planning data like wave height, wind speed and water temperature.

SWP purchased and deployed the buoys with grant funding provided by the Great Lakes Observing System. The navigation and planning data provided from the buoys will be useful for the National Weather Service, Environment Canada and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as well for SWP’s long-term climate adaptation planning with coastal communities in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Live data from the buoys can be accessed at seagull.glos.org/landing.
