Class 1 Sudrheim Offshore Racing Team A Scratch For Thunder On Cocoa Beach Season-Opener

Offshore racing fans will have to wait at least until the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, June 30-July, in Southwest Florida to see Sudrheim Offshore Racing in Class 1 action. The Norway-based team has been working on its 43-foot Victory catamaran at its United States facility in Florida, but the boat won’t be ready in time for this weekend’s season-opener in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Though they won’t have it completed in time for the Class 1 World Championship Series season-opener this weekend in Cocoa Beach, Fla., the Sudrheim Offshore Racing team is working diligently to its 43-foot Victory raceboat complete. Rendering courtesy Sudrheim Racing.

According to team representative Gro Helgesen, the catamaran is still being rigged with its Mercury Racing 1100 Comp engines, which are spec power for the class.

“We still don’t know when we will be ready for testing but are working hard at our Florida location,” said Ove Trøen, the owner/driver of the Sudrheim Offshore Racing team. “We look forward to being part of Class 1 and wish all good luck for the first race in Cocoa Beach.”

Although Sudrheim Offshore Racing is new to the Powerboat P1-produced Class 1 World Championship Series, it is not new to Class 1 competition. As previously reported on speedonthewater.com, most of its members were part of the famed Spirit of Norway team that debuted in 1997 and won five world titles, three of those consecutively.

In related news reported yesterday on this website, the Class 1 XINSURANCE/Good Boy Vodka team MTI raceboat the team acquired from the former Class 1 Abu Dhabi outfit was held up longer than expected in customs in Florida and is currently being painted in preparation for the second round race in Sarasota, Fla.
