BoatUS Offers 3 Ways Boaters Can Help Mother Earth on April 22 and Beyond

This Earth Day and beyond, help make a difference on the water with three earth-friendly tips from non-profit BoatUS Foundation.
- Make a trash plan to help keep your trash out of the water. A good trash container is one that is secured to the boat and has a firm cover to prevent trash from flying into the water no matter how fast you’re going. Same for recyclables, and if you’re an angler a separate container for fishing line can help you easily recycle it at the shore.
- Prevent fuel spills. Start by knowing how much fuel your boat holds and much much you’ll likely need. Turn off all electrical and refuel with your ear near the fill so you can hear the change in tone as the tank gets full. Use an absorbent pad or donut, and dispose of any fuel-soaked pads safely.
- Look into shrink wrap recylcing. Some states or local regions make it easy to recycle shrink wrap, but if yours doesn’t, start asking for one. Any marina operator will tell you that listening to their customers is an important part of their success.
