A New York Week

Well, we sure are feeling like New York is the city that never sleeps because it seems we didn’t get much sleep this past week! We made the most of every minute that we weren’t working and it was a nice change of pace from daily cruising, although we may have been busier in one spot than we normally are when we’re on the move. After getting our iconic Statue of Liberty photo in the New York Harbor, we made our way up the Hudson River where we grabbed a mooring ball at Dyckman Marina. Dyckman Marina is a NYC Parks facility located up near 190th Street. Most loopers that choose to stay in the city for a couple nights opt for lower Manhattan, but we couldn’t beat $240 on a mooring ball for the week, which meant several subway rides. Luckily for us, the nearest subway station was less than a half mile walk from the marina and about a 20 minute ride to midtown.
As previously mentioned, we made the most of every minute that we weren’t in front of our computers. Tuesday night we went on a self-run pizza tour with our friends Josh and Haley on S/V Slacker, which included:
● Happy hour and a margherita pizza at Roey’s
● A pepperoni pizza at John’s of Bleeker Street (made famous by Barstool)
● A pepperoni pizza with vodka sauce at Denino’s
● A vodka pepperoni slice with burrata and hot honey at Jonny’s Pizza (our favorite)
Later in the week Evan and I treated ourselves to a nice date night – we felt we deserved it after 1,400 nautical miles! We started with drinks at the famous Plaza Hotel then enjoyed live jazz music at The Carnegie Club. I won’t lie, it was nice to get ourselves dressed up for the evening! On Saturday night we made it over to Yankee Stadium for a classic rivalry game against the Boston Red Sox. Sadly, they lost but it was a high scoring game full of excitement. Ripley also got to experience the New York City excitement by riding the subway and walking the entire length of Central Park. We also made sure to get her photo on the iconic Met steps (Metropolitan Museum of Art)!
Come Sunday morning we felt that we had enough of the big city life and continued on with our journey. A short cruise later we ended up on anchor in Haverstraw, New York. The northern portion of the Hudson River and the Erie Canal is currently experiencing a great amount of rainfall that is pushing more water than usual down the river. This has been resulting in extreme current speeds, meaning it’s important we time our cruising with an incoming tide. This will lessen the farther north we go, but for now we want to optimize our speed, which is already pretty slow.
We’ve already been in awe of the elevation gain with steep cliffs and abundant greenery. The water is so deep along the Hudson River that we noticed some of the channel markers are up on the cliffs. It’s a nice change of scenery than what we’ve been used to for the last three months.
Cheers to continuing the adventure!
