Azimut has dropped a brand-new hybrid line that embraces a connection to the ocean.

What comes to mind when you think of fun island? Wait, scratch that—I don’t want to know. But perhaps part of the image that’s conjured in your head when you thought of that combination of words had something to do with uncorking a beverage or two. Well, in terms of the “Fun Island” on the aft deck of Azimut’s brand new Seadeck line, you’re at least halfway correct.

Fun island is the builder’s nickname for the Seadeck 6’s aft deck which will be, interestingly enough, made of cork. Azimut is using cork, they noted, instead of teak as a conscientious decision, being that cork trees do not need to be deforested for their wood and are capable of being harvested for bark at least 17 times in a single cork tree’s life. You might be asking yourself, what’s fun about that? The fun part would come when you observe the rest of the area—with large windows that, when opened, will allow the interior and exterior of the boat to serve as a single space, the Seadeck transforms itself into less of a boat and something more in resemblance to your own personal island, where socializing from one end of the boat to the other (and dare I say throwing a frisbee) becomes all too easy.

“We wanted to create a boat that puts maximum emphasis on the concept of openness and transparency, and that also represented a radical change in terms of the relationship with nature,” Seadeck 6’s Designer Alberto Mancini said. “With the introduction of the Fun Island, Seadeck is actually a floating island where owners can get away from their daily routine and live in total contact with the sea.”

The approach Azimut is taking is a more conscious relationship with nature, the builder noted, utilizing Volvo Penta’s forthcoming hybrid propulsion and onboard systems designed to reduce energy consumption and emissions. One part of the green energy puzzle has been employing carbon fiber, with more than 40 percent of the boat made from this material, allowing for what Azimut says is the most efficient planning hull they’ve ever built. The Seadeck, according to Azimut, also touts zero emissions when on the hook thanks to a state-of-the-art battery pack. This combination, the company calculates, will deliver a 40-percent reduction in CO2 emissions over a typical year of use.

“We prefer to talk about consciousness rather than sustainability, a philosophy that determines our way of practicing architecture,” collaborating Designers Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez said. “We try to work by subtraction, because reduction means durability, both technical and aesthetic. And a boat must stand the test of time and be beautiful forever.”

With an open aft lounge and so much space to enjoy the view of the ocean around you, this design is sure to make for a fun escape once it hits the water. Seadeck 6, a 60-foot model will be the first of a three-model series set to be built and launched by 2024. Hull number one is expected to debut at the Dusseldorf show that year. The Seadeck 7 and 8 are expected to launch by 2025.
