For June through August, there’s no finer place to be than Michigan for a high-performance powerboat owner. If you live in the Detroit Metro area, you have Lake St. Clair and the stunning waters of the St. Clair River in your backyard. Head north and you’ll eventually find yourself on Lake Charlevoix in Boyne City, the home of the annually epic Boyne Thunder Poker Run. For big beautiful water, you have Lake Michigan. For more mellower times, small waterways such as Torch Lake and Clam Lake abound.

Byrne and Hope Harmon are delighted with their new Nor-Tech 390 Sport Console, which they took delivery of earlier this month.

But then there are the other 40 weeks of the year when—for all intents and purposes—Michigan boating shuts down and Michiganders such as Byrne and Hope Harmon with the time and means take their boating act on the road to Southwest Florida. The Harmons, who live just outside of Grand Rapids and are in the commercial construction business, have second home in Tierra Verde.

When they bought their home in the St. Petersburg-adjacent community a couple of years ago, the Harmons owned a 2006 model-year Cigarette 39 Top Gun sportboat with supercharged 800-hp engines. They kept the Cigarette in Michigan and ended up buying a 26-foot Sea Hunt center console to keep at their Florida home.

“I loved that Cigarette but the blower motors required a lot of upkeep,” said Byrne Harmon. “A couple of weeks after we bought the Sea Hunt, my brother and sister and other family members came down. We had about 10 people on the boat on a trip to Anna Marie Island and my wife said, ‘I love this boat. What’s wrong with this?’

“I said, ‘Yeah, but it’s too small for me,’” he continued. “But I had told myself that if I ever bought a 39-foot center console it would be a Nor-Tech—l love the lines and the look. So I sold the Cigarette and ordered one.”

The Harmons purchased the Titan-grey-and-black 39-footer through Great Lakes Nor-Tech dealer American Custom Marine of Kimball, Mich. Michael Knoblock, the owner of the multi-brand dealership, delivered the boat to the couple in Michigan earlier this month.

“Mike follows up on everything and he’s very knowledgeable,” said Byrne Harmon. “You can get ahold of him anytime and if you miss him he always call back. Building a boat like this is like building a house, and Mike really took the time to help my wife to pick the interior colors.

“We had seen it on a visit to Nor-Tech, but that was when the boat wasn’t all together,” he continued. “As soon as Mike showed up and we uncovered it, my wife was like, ‘I freaking love it.’ Mike said, ‘That’s always a good sign.’”

Though they are not registered for this year’s Boyne Thunder Poker Run, the Harmons plan on catching the early July event from their new 39-footer. They’d also like to take it to the Lake of the Ozarks in late August to catch the annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout.

Said Byrne Harmon, “Now I have a boat I can use in Michigan and Florida—or anywhere.”

The Harmons have a big-league hauler for their 39-footer.
