DCB M42R Catamaran Update: Close To Testing

DCB Performance Marine’s Johnny Bauer and Tony Chiaramonte had been hoping to take M42R catamaran No. 1 for its first ride two days ago on Lake Pleasant, which is the closest waterway to the Phoenix-based custom go-fast catamaran company. That was the plan, at least when the week began. But they wisely realized they had created an arbitrary deadline for themselves and the entire DCB team, and it added unnecessary pressure.

A year in the making, the DCB M42R catamaran No 1 is almost ready for its first test-session.

“A few key items kept us from taking that Thanksgiving-day ride that I could just taste for months,” Bauer said, then chuckled. “Tony and I had a discussion Wednesday morning and decided that even though the boat could be run in its current configuration, instead we’d take the first M42R to the water as a fully completed unit.

“It felt as if we were pushing a square peg into a round hole, and that didn’t feel right to either of us,” he continued. “A couple more business days would allow us to operate in our normal fashion and hopefully avoid the consequences that usually creep up with hurrying.”

All of the 42-footer’s electronics have been installed and are operational.

Beyond question, the DCB team has made significant progress since the last installment of this series chronicling the build of the Mercury Racing 500R outboard-engine-powered 42-footer. The rigging team has installed and dressed the engines. Rigger John Teague has “digitally dialed-in” the catamaran’s JL Audio sound system, and all its Garmin GPS units have been updated and programmed with DCB-specific screens. The boat’s C-Zone switching system is programmed and operational.

A few “newly designed parts that were late to the party,” Bauer explained, will be powder-coated and installed next week. So, too, will the SeaDek flooring for the cockpit sole and transom steps.

Once the cat is weighed and fitted to its trailer, it will be ready for its first test session.

“Our rigging team has been sweating all of the details involved with building the first unit of a new model, and the entire team is very satisfied with how it’s turning out,” Bauer explained. “Tony Chiaramonte, Jeff Johnston, Paul Miller and I took turns sitting in it and looked at every nook and cranny. We’re pleased with the results and excited to get it to the water.

“All in all, we know it will be worth the wait,” he added. “Just one year ago, this whole concept was a bunch of ‘ones and zeros’ on a server at Marine Concepts. So to have it this close to the finish line with it looking like it does—with the quality our team has put into it—leaves us all thankful.”

SeaDek installation on the transom steps and cockpit sole is slated for next week.
