Image Of The Week: Red-Hot On The Side
Last week’s two Mod V-class races during the Race World Offshore Key West World Championships were among the most entertaining contests of the bunch. As correspondent Eric Colby reported yesterday, the Mod V title went to Nick Buis and J.J. Turk in XINSURANCE/Statement Marine, who also earned the American Power Boat Association national championship in the class this year.

But the most entertaining Mod V performance of the week belonged to owner/driver Kirk Hanna and throttleman Mark Rinda of the NMBRV Resort team. The duo jumped to an early lead in Sunday’s race and stretched it out and looked like a possible winner in their 29-foot Extreme V-bottom until a broken coil mount knocked them out of the contest just two laps before the finish.
To say Hanna and Rinda ran with reckless abandon would be inaccurate. They are not reckless. But to say they pushed their flaming-red 29-footer to its limits would be on point.
You’ve heard about boats “running on rails,” right? At one point in the race, NMBRV Resort was running on the rub rail.
