It’s not unusual for DCB Performance Marine to deliver a new catamaran at its Owners Regatta, which opens Thursday in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., with registration and a welcome party ahead of Friday’s lunch run and dinner celebration. It happens almost every year. That tradition will continue with the delivery of an M37R to Dan Kuhn of Cape Coral, Fla., who will be joined by his significant other, Linda Harrill, and brother, Robert.

Dan Kuhn will experience his new DCB M37R catamaran for the first time later will fellow devotees of the brand.

But this time, there’s a wrinkle to the delivery. Not only is the Mercury Racing 500R outboard engine-powered 37-footer Kuhn’s first creation from the Phoenix company, it is his first high-performance boat. He’s had a few powerboats of the runabout and towed-watersports kind. Yet he’s never owned anything like the swift beauty he is about see in person for the first time.

Of course, the successful financial planner, who moved to Cape Coral from Maryland in 2016, knows he’ll need catamaran driving instruction beyond what he’ll get from DCB vice-president Tony Chiaramonte during the regatta.

“I am taking the Shaun Torrente driving course when I get to Florida,” said Kuhn. “He’s a great resource and he’s right around the corner from me.”

Kuhn looked at several different catamarans before settling on DCB after seeing Mad Props at the 2022 Miami International Boat Show.

Though the M37R, which is playfully dubbed Weeeee, is a first for Kuhn, the upcoming DCB event is not. He attended last year and spent time in the Cowboy & Indian M37R co-owned by Kelly and Julie O’Hara and Kiran and Jessica Pinisetti.

“It was freaking awesome, really smooth,” he said. “I also got to ride with Kris and Shelby Hansen in their M37R.”

Kuhn started looking at catamarans in the early 2000s. During the 2022 Miami International Boat Show, he checked out the original Mad Props M37R owned by Greg Harris and Yvonne Aleman. He liked what he saw. Some six months later, he ordered one of his own.

The O’Haras, as well as Aleman and Harris and their mutual friends and DCB M37R owners Greg and Heather Scheller, will be at the upcoming regatta with their cats. So Kuhn and his guests will have something of an immediate “friend-group” during the two-day event.

When it’s over, they will haul their 37-foot cat back to Cape Coral.

“I’ll probably do some runs with the Fort Myers Offshore club when I get home and go from there,” said Kuhn. “But my main goal now is to get some experience, and get familiar with the boat.”

As the owner is about to learn firsthand, DCB’s attention to detail is second to none.
