Blount Family Blown Away By Doug Wright 39 Carbon Waves and Wheels Edition Cat

Although Oregon performance boaters Brian and Leslie Blount were unable to make it to the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Central Missouri to see their brand new Doug Wright Powerboats 39 Carbon Waves and Wheels Edition catamaran on display during the massive street party a couple of weeks ago, the couple took delivery of the boat at the popular waterway a week later, and they were knocked out.

In fact, the Blounts, who were joined by their two sons and their girlfriends, spent several days getting familiar with their fully loaded eight-seat 39-footer during their first real visit to Lake of the Ozarks. According to Brian Blount, they were thrilled with every aspect of the boat after being able to run it in flat water midweek and in significantly rougher conditions on Labor Day weekend.

“This new boat is on another level; it’s a beast,” said Brian Blount, who also owns a 36-foot Wright Performance cat with twin Mercury Racing 400R engines. “I’ve never driven an outboard cat that accelerates like this one. Honestly, it feels more like an inboard boat—except it gets on plane at 12 mph with no blowout. And the best part is that the boat handled big water way better than I expected. We got some of that nasty washing machine stuff and I couldn’t believe how it ate that water up. It’s impressive. I’ve been in a 42-foot Doug Wright and to me the 39 feels like more boat thanks to the wider tunnel (11’ 4” compared to 11’ 8”).

“Everything about the boat is on another level—it’s the best-finished boat I’ve ever owned,” he continued. “Doug Wright builds a great product and Waves and Wheels did a great job all the way through from the rigging and the paint to the stereo and the interior. We’re so happy we went in this direction. Justin (Wagner, owner of Waves and Wheels) was great to work with. Our cockpit cover didn’t fit perfectly so he sent it back and got it replaced before I even asked him to do that.”

The only thing Blount said he wasn’t satisfied with was the tint of the windshield.

“The windshield had a little too much tint for me and there was a little bit of a distortion on one side so Justin ordered me a new one, no questions asked,” he said. “I thought that was pretty cool.”

Blount said he plans to use the carbon-fiber 39-footer, which features a full Bluave Marine Audio sound system, Lumitech lighting, a 22-inch Garmin display and a paintjob from Graphix1 Paint, one more time at Lake the Ozarks in the fall before sending it to Florida where he plans to do some Florida Powerboat Club events and experience boating in a completely opposite part of the country.

Rather than bring their new cat to Oregon, Brian and Leslie Blount plan to take it to Florida and use it in the Sunshine State this winter.

“We bought the 39 for the bigger water—our 36 is plenty big for where we boat at home—and we’re so glad we did,” he explained. “I’ll admit I wasn’t sure about Waves and Wheels because I’d never dealt with them, but Justin and his team went above and beyond. The guys at Doug Wright assured me they would and they were right. I have no complaints; it’s a great boat. We can’t wait to run it down in Florida. We’re pretty excited since this is all new to us.”

Wagner is definitely excited that the Blounts are planning to head to Florida and show off the build.

“The Blounts were a pleasure to work with and I can’t wait to boat with them in Key West,” said Wagner, who added that the next Doug Wright that Waves and Wheels has in progress and available is a 36 Carbon. He also has two 42-footers and a 39-footer in production at the Doug Wright facility in Melbourne, Fla.
