Lake Champlain Poker Run Maxed Out
Just a month ago, Brian Hoar and Chris Fisher were running their catamarans on the St. Lawrence River as part of the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run fleet. Not only is the Clayton, N.Y., event among their favorite events, it’s a short haul. Clayton is just a 220 miles from their hometown of Burlington, Vt.
With 75 registered boats ahead of tomorrow’s main event, the organizers of the sixth annual Lake Champlain Poker Run have a record-setter on their hands. Photo by Tim Sharkey copyright Sharkey Images.
Plus, the event inspires them before they return home to help fellow organizers Nicole Carlson, David Wulfson and Julie produce the Lake Champlain Poker Run.
Sold out at an event-record-setting 75 boats, the sixth annual Vermont event starts today with a lunch run followed by a welcome party in Burlington Harbor Marina. Another party follows tomorrow’s main event on the breathtaking 125-mile-long waterway.
The event’s prior largest fleet boasted 68 boats. Last year’s run attracted 57 boats.
“We have a lot of new boats and serious hardware from out of state that will be experiencing Lake Champlain for the first time,” said Hoar.
Added Fisher, “We had an influx of participants from Canada sign up in the last two weeks, thanks to our 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run relationships and the ‘Wozencraft worldwide tour,’” Fisher added, then chuckled.
Most important, at least as growth is concerned, the Lake Champlain Poker Run has steadily expanded and improved its experience for participants. The organizers added the Friday lunch run, for example, last year. Both parties are relatively new—in the earliest years of the run, everything ended after the Saturday lunch stop.
A few years back, the organizers added Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, a summer-camp experience for children battling cancer and their families, as the event’s benefitting charity. The happening raised more than $45,000 for the non-profit outfit last year.
“Of course, we’re hoping to top that this year,” said Hoar
