With the XINSURANCE team reportedly rejoining Class 1 starting with the Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Ind.—the specialty insurance powerhouse is the event’s title sponsor—the 222 Offshore announcement means as many as five Class 1 teams could compete in Key West this November.

“That’s great news,” said Rich Wyatt, the owner and throttleman of dfYoung/Good Boy Vodka team. “It wouldn’t be the same without 222 Offshore.”

The owner and driver of the Class 1 Monster Energy/M CON team, Tyler Miller was equally delighted.

“I can’t wait to match up against the reigning world champions again, ” he said. “To have the international brand with Darren and Gio (renowned Italian throttleman Giovanni Carpitella) is not only great for Class 1 and offshore racing, but also great for the competition and comraderie.”

The Key West event will provide a showcase for savvy navvy, a navigation app the 222 Offshore group reportedly has been using to prepare for the event, according to a press release from the team.

“Coming from a sailing background, I’m acutely aware of the importance of the weather and tidal conditions when it comes to racing,” said Darren Nicholson, the owner and driver of the 222 Offshore Class 1 and XCAT team who entered the offshore powerboat racing realm in 2013 with three sailing world championships to his credit. “ At each race location I do my homework so to speak, especially locations I’ve never raced before. I look at the wind direction, wind speed, tidal flow, the tide times and change of tide, the topography of the ocean floor as all these elements play a part in how we set up the boat.

“The savvy navvy app is brilliant,” he continued “It gives me all this information in one place.  I can plot the GPS coordinates of the race course and know exactly what will be happening at that particular time of the day at that exact location. Savvy navvy gives it to me in one very user friendly app on my phone.”
