Weather Scrubs Kuttawa Cannonball Run Main Event

Sitting on the aft deck of a houseboat after yesterday’s Kuttawa Cannonball Run lunch run to Prizer Point Marina on Lake Barkley, Jeff Hoefling offered a philosophical stake on the likely weather-forced cancellation of today’s 120-mile roundtrip lunch-run up Kentucky Lake to Breakers Marina in Tennessee.

The scene at Kuttawa Harbor was messy scene morning.

“You know, if we do have to cancel it will be the first time in eight years,” he said. “That’s not too bad.

“And who knows?” he continued. “During our second or third year, the weather was bad but cleared after the drivers’ meeting.”

Unfortunately for Hoefling and fellow organizers Terry Martin and Stephen Miles, as well as 160-plus registered participants, the weather system ripped through the Kuttawa area this morning as predicted. The system was part of the same one that delayed this reporter at Dallas-Fort Worth International for seven hours Thursday on his way to Nashville and then Kuttawa, and led to the cancellation of the Class 1 race at the Lake of the Ozarks on Friday.

The organizers made the lunch-run cancelation official in a Facebook post a little more than an hour ago.

“We will be donating the 400-plus meals (purchased for the lunch run) to the U.S. Army/Fort Campbell in Fort Campbell, Ky.,” the post read. “Thank you Shannon Drugmand Connor and The Cutting Edge Catering, Events and More for working so hard up until the last minute to prepare the meals and deliver them to Fort Campbell.

But while the lunch run is off, the eighth annual Kuttawa Cannonball Run is far from over.

“Further updates to afternoon and evening activities will be provided as we get more clarity on the weather,” the organizers stated in the pot.

Added Martin, “If we can get these clouds to burn off, we will raft-up in Carmack Bay per the original schedule. We are watching weather hour by hour to judge.”

Despite the foul weather in Kuttawa this morning, the organizers found a patriotic sliver lining by donating more than 400 meals to United States Army.
