Image Of The Week—Baja Beauty
During its heydays in the 1990s and early 2000s, Baja Marine sportboats were everywhere. And for good reason. The conventional V-bottoms then built in Bucyrus, Ohio, were solid values, particularly for entry-level buyers. More than a few longtime performance-boat fans started with a 22-foot Baja Outlaw worked their way up the line before moving on to big-dollar, big-power V-bottoms and catamarans from custom builders.

Now the Baja brand, like most production-line-built V-bottom lines, is dormant. But plenty of immaculately kept older models remain, as witnessed by those at the eighth annual Kuttawa Cannonball Run in Kentucky. After yesterday’s lunch run to Prizer Point Marina on the shores of Lake Barkley, the post-meal raft-up was loaded with vintage Baja powerboats.
But none was prettier than a 1999 model-year 30-footer owned by Jon and Selina Christie. Powered by twin MerCruiser 454 Magnum engines, the 25-year-old V-bottom isn’t just well-kept. Two years ago, the owners had it dressed in a Stephen Miles Design paintjob.
Said Miles, “That actually was the second Baja I have painted in my career. The first one I did—I can’t even remember the model—was before I started Stephen Miles Design.
“It’s really simple—and really pretty,” he added.
Not to mention really timeless.
Editor’s note: The second day of the Kuttawa Cannonball Run currently is on a weather-hold.
