Dirty Money All Goodwin With Super Cat Power

Dirty Money All Goodwin With Super Cat Power

Though the Dirty Money team came within a fuel-gulp of claiming the Super Cat-class checkered flag last month at the Race World Offshore 7 Mile Offshore Grand Prix in Marathon, Fla., the outcome was a success on at least one front. It was the team’s first outing with new spec power from Goodwin Competition of Omro, Wis., in its Skater 388 raceboat.

Making approximately 800 hp a side, the same engines will power the Dirty Money Super Cat this Sunday in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

The Dirty Money team has a twin Goodwin competition engines under the hatch—and four more are on the way.

Billy Pyburn, Jr., the Dirty Money team’s throttleman, got familiar with engine-builder’s Todd Goodwin’s handiwork when he commissioned Skater Powerboats to build his first stunning 38-foot Pure Platinum catamaran in 2010. The exotic, supercharged power program yielded mixed results, but to be fair to everyone involved it was pushing the limits of reliability and manageability.

But Pyburn didn’t lose faith in Goodwin, who is well-known for building winning engines in the automobile racing world. He was certain Goodwin could replicate that success in the Spec-class powerboat racing world, and in Dirty Money’s case that means Super Cat.

“We made the decision right after Key West last year to make an engine change,” Pyburn explained. “I reached out immediately to Todd Goodwin because I felt that this was really more his cup of team. He really excels at building engines for the stadium trucks—they’re more like endurance engines just like we are in Super Cat, So I felt like it could be a great connection and we could work it all out.

We’re are still waiting on our new engines,” he continued with a broad smile on his face. “We have two new sets coming.”

In December 2023, Pyburn and team owner Beau Renfroe met with Goodwin at the annual Performance Racing Industry Show—PRI for short in the high-performance engine world—in Indianapolis. Renfroe put his faith in his throttleman and the trio hatched an engine-program deal for the Dirty Money team.

“My only experience with Todd was knowing what Bill had run and Chris Bradley and James Branton had run,” said Renfroe.

And then came the Marathon race.

“I was really happy with the Goodwin engines,” Pyburn recalled. “I’m not going to say that going into Sunday I wasn’t concerned about us making a lap. We were having issues with fuel pumps. They worked on them all night long and they were still having issues with them Sunday morning. We ended up running one motor on a mechanical fuel pump and the other one on an electric to get through the race. I thought to myself, if I get through a couple of laps I’ll be lucky.

“But it all worked,” he added. “The motors ran great. They were awesome. I couldn’t have been happier with them.”
