Endurance Racing Champ Lockyer Going V Extreme For Key West Worlds – Speed on the Water
It’s been a big year for United Kingdom-based offshore powerboat endurance racer Rob Lockyer. At the end of the six-race 2023 United Kingdom Offshore Powerboat Racing Association Class 1 World Championship Series, the Good Boy Vodka team owner and his cockpit-mate Scott Younger tied with Miles Jennings and Drew Langdon of the Silverline team for first-place. That it had never happened before in the series and that both teams ran Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats V-bottoms made the result that much more extraordinary.
Endurance racing champion Rob Lockyer and a yet-to-selected driver will campaign this 42-foot Fountain in the V Extreme class as Team 25 during the Race World Offshore Key West World Championship set for November 6-12.
But Lockyer isn’t finished with the 2023 offshore racing season just yet. Next month, he’ll run a 42-foot Fountain Powerboats V-bottom in the V Extreme class at the Race World Offshore World Championship Series in Key West, Fla. Though he has extensive powerboat racing experience overseas, the Key West Worlds will be his first United States event.
Retaining its Team 25 name from its successful UKOPRA rookie season, the V Extreme-class outfit will be sponsored by Fountain Powerboats dealer Cortez Cove Marina and Shore Thing Storage. Both business are owned by longtime powerboat enthusiast Simon Williams.
Lockyer will throttle the 42-footer, which formerly ran as Wix Filters and is being currently renovated. The team has not selected a driver.
Lockyer and Younger ran this 52-foot Outerlimits in the 2023 UKOPRA Class 1 World Championship Series of offshore endurance racing in the United Kingdom.
“Venice Auto Marine in Florida has built two new American Power Boat Association-spec engines and we should receive the second one today,” Lockyer explained. “The Team 25 crew lead by Charlie Williams will put the boat together and hopefully begin testing before heading to Key West.
“The boat will have ‘Fountain’ down its hullsides in big letters,” he added.
Lockyer, who is still in England, credited Williams with keeping the project moving in Florida.
“Simon has been amazing putting everything together stateside for this event,” he said. “And Win Farnsworth, who owns the Team Farnsworth/Hancock Claims V Extreme team has been so helpful to us, as well as expanding this class and moving it forward.
“We hope to continue this campaign with a completely rebuilt boat for 2024,” he added.
Team 25 has less than a month to get the 42-footer ready for the three-race series in Key West.
