Once again, the time is almost upon us for one of the largest and longest running annual marine trade shows on the West Coast, the Pacific Marine Expo.

This year’s event takes place Nov. 8-10 at the Lumen Field Event Center in Seattle. And this year, as usual, the company behind Fishermen’s News Magazine, Maritime Publishing, will be in attendance all three days.

Also on hand will be representatives from Maritime Institute, the San Diego-based business that Maritime Publishing is under the umbrella of.

Maritime Publishing and Maritime Institute personnel will staff booth 220 during this year’s expo, and a handful of representatives from each company are scheduled to be there, including CEO-Publisher Dave Abrams, Advertising Sales Manager Katie Higgins, Senior Designer Kathy Samuelson and myself, Managing Editor Mark Nero.

So if you’re going to attend the expo, please feel to drop by our booth say hello and pick up a complimentary issue of Fishermen’s News and/or Pacific Maritime; we’d really like to see you.

Part of my role during the two days that I’ll be there will be to talk to people within the commercial fishing about the issues that matter to them, whether it be fishing regulations, environmental concerns, offshore wind development – you name it.

Whatever you’d like to talk about, I’d like to hear. Because it’s input and feedback from readers like you that helps dictate the stories and topics that Fishermen’s News covers.

So if you want to help influence what people see and read in the magazine, please feel free to stop by booth 220 and have a chat. Or, if you happen to see me wandering around the Event Center on Nov. 9th and 10th, feel free to say hello and start a conversation.

Although Fishermen’s News has a staff of great people, the most important people to us are you, the reader and subscriber. And part of our mission is engaging with our readership, so we look forward to doing so at this year’s Pacific Marine Expo.

Among the reasons our parent company, Maritime Institute, will be there is to spread the word about its newest mariner training facility, which is located in Washington state.

Specifically, it’s at the Port of Everett’s Waterfront Place, 1130 West Marine View Dr.

Maritime Institute is leasing about 6,000 square feet of interior and exterior light industrial space at the port’s Maritime, Exploration and Innovation Complex, located in Waterfront Place’s Craftsman District.

Both classroom and on-the-water instruction are set to take place at the location, and will result in recognized certifications for the maritime industry. Courses are expected to begin this coming January.

But back to the expo itself: this year, in addition to the usual hundreds of booths and exhibitors, as well as awards and performances at the event, there will also be various new educational activities, all of which deal with contemporary topics of importance to the fishing industry.

Among them are Sustainability in Shipyard and Port Operations; Commercial Fishing Vessels Go Electric; Fishing for the Future: Innovations Progressing the Industry; Mental Health for Commercial Fishermen; Offshore Wind; Engaging the Next Generation of Commercial Fishermen; and Alaska Seafood Market Updates and Opportunities.

More details about each session can be found on the official Pacific Marine Expo website, under the Free Expo Education Program: https://www.pacificmarineexpo.com.

See you in Seattle.
