Trident Seafoods Engaged in Site Work for Unalaska Construction Project

In late July, Trident Seafoods began laying the groundwork for the first bunkhouses for a new processing plant at Captains Bay in Unalaska, located at the heart of robust Bering Sea and Aleutian Island region fishing grounds.

Marc Kielmeyer, an engineering technician for the city of Unalaska, said that Trident has been granted the required permits and that site work for the bunkhouses got underway in late July. Construction of the actual bunkhouses, however, was still in the works, he said.

Unalaska Community Broadcasting, a community radio station, noted in late July that Trident Seafoods began a feasibility study in 2017 to explore ways to upgrade its plant at Akutan, but ultimately decided that a complete rebuild was the only reasonable option.

Subsequently, Trident began constructing a dock at Captains Bay in the spring of 2022 after its subsidiary, LFS, secured a tidelands leave from the city of Unalaska.

Trident Seafoods CEO Joe Bundrant said his company would provide updates as the construction project progresses. Bundrant, now in his 50s, began working for Trident as a 13-year-old during the Bristol Bay summer salmon fishery. He became chief executive officer of the company in 2013. His father, Chuck Bundrant, who founded Trident, died in 2021 at the age of 79.

The privately owned company, founded in 1973, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Trident is one of the nation’s largest seafood firms, with some 9,000 employees and 12 shore-based plants in Alaska, with secondary processing facilities in Washington state, Minnesota and Georgia, as well as China, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Latin America.
