Sequence Of The Week: Look Mom, No Drive
Outside of last Saturday’s testing session and pole-position qualifier for Super Cat teams, SV Offshore Racing team owner and throttleman Vinnie Diorio got very little seat in his 39-foot Outerlimits catamaran at the Race World Offshore 7 Mile Offshore Grand Prix in Marathon, Fla. The Sunday afternoon Super Cat and Super Stock contests were scrubbed thanks to uncommonly foul weather in the Middle Florida Keys.
Translation? Diorio and rookie driver Matt Jamniczky will have to wait for Thunder On Cocoa Beach, May 18-21, which is the second contest race of the American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series, for their first true racing experience together.
And so the Marker 17 incident began—note the flying stern-drive in the upper right of the image. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.
But that didn’t mean Diorio didn’t enjoy—if that’s the right word—a little competition in Sunday’s Mod V-class race. He joined Marker 17 Marine team owner Brian Forehand in the North Carolinian’s Outerlimits V-bottom.
And continued.
And least until the 29-footer lost its stern-drive and spun in the early laps, which led to a whole lot of wild evasive maneuvering behind it and the first red flag of the day. (For the record, the Sun Print team immediately behind Marker 17 Marine at the moment of the incident. went on to take the victory.)
Asked what the instant loss of total control felt like in the boat, Diorio shrugged. “It was pretty gentle, actually,” he said.
And finished.
