1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run Video Is One From The Heart—And Mind

As a general rule, videos capturing go-fast boating events are long on boats and short on story. Watching boat after boat running on a given waterway is compelling for a moment or two, perhaps even longer for the rightfully proud owners of each boat. But as storytelling meant to engage viewers outside a particular cockpit, that video format falls flat.

To be fair, most are produced in a hurry with a premium placed on showcasing hardware. Storytelling is a different animal. It takes more time and planning.

So when Ken Lalonde, one of the founders of the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run in Upstate New York reached out and asked if we would produce a video of the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run, we were delighted to oblige. Inspired by our “In The Lead” documentary-style video series backed by Mercury Racing, MYCO Trailers, CP Performance, Hamilton Marine Finance, Hardin Marine and Bluave Marine Audio and now in its second-year, Lalonde asked if we could produce something of the same storytelling quality for the 2022 event.

Now that video is live (see below). And we think you’re going to love it.

We covered the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run in person in 2017—its inaugural year—and in 2018 so we knew had to blend the environment, hardware and purpose of the event in a cohesive and compelling story. We had to touch on the past, including the two years the event was canceled because of the pandemic, without getting mired it into. We had to capture the emotion of a wish granted for a five-year-old girl currently whipping leukemia’s with getting maudlin or smarmy.

Thanks to our colleagues Brad and Katie DiMaggio and Ryan Wenk—a video production team beyond compare in the go-fast boating world—we think we pulled it off.

We can’t wait to see what you think.
